Going “green” should be the goal of every one living here on planet Earth. Our everyday travels, communication and lifestyle can always be adjusted to keep the environment in mind. Sometimes just approaching the subject from a “green” viewpoint makes the task at hand not only easier but more worthwhile. You can make your life a more environmentally intelligent one by combining conservation, technology and old fashioned common sense. Here are simple and painless ways to achieve a green life and decrease your carbon footprint.
Computer and Laptop
Decrease your use of fossil fuels by thinking twice about jumping in your car and driving. Pick up your phone and call, text or email someone first. If you have question about a product or business, research them on the internet first whenever possible first. A laptop with an Internet or Wi-Fi connection should be your first line of defense to save gasoline. If using a laptop you obviously want to choose one that will last.
Bicycle
Walk, ride your bicycle or find another mode of physical transportation for short trips. Combine your daily tasks with a mobile form of exercise. Take a walk to the supermarket for that last minute item or small bag of groceries. Attach a pack or basket on the back of your bicycle for carrying and delivering goods. If you’re in good shape, rediscover the childhood thrill of inline skates or skateboarding. These moves will not only decrease your use of petroleum products but may save your live in the process. Cardiovascular exercise is the key to a longer, healthier and more enjoyable lifespan.
Carpooling and Mass Transit
Carpool and use public transportation whenever possible for business, leisure and longer trips. Speak with your employer to see if there is an employee carpool program at the company or corporation where you work. If you are self employed, or employed at a small business, inquire as to whether there are a group of employees living within a close geographical area that would like to carpool to save the cost of their daily commute.
Traveling with public transportation for business or pleasure can be as easy as checking out the webpage of the transit authority of any city, county or state. You can preplan and map out a trip way ahead of time, or mere moments before you leave, by using your tablet, laptop or Smartphone. Many major cities have expanded, improved and upgraded their bus, train and mass transit systems in recent years. Large vehicles like buses that once used diesel fuels and vastly contributed to air pollution with toxic exhaust have been replaced with “clean fuel” models that are quieter and much more environmentally friendly.
Out With the Old (and Wasteful)
Consider replacing an older car or personal vehicle with one that gets greater gas mileage to travel greener and more economically. When the time comes to replace that older or large vehicle, take a look at smaller, hybrid or electric model automobiles. The automobile industry has heard the cry of the consumer and has come up with many vehicles that can carry even a large family comfortably. Electric and hybrid cars have been many inroads over the last few years and have become more available and affordable to the new car buyer. The auto industry has included mileage saving vehicles in every group and subgroup of new cars from the standard economy car to sports vehicles and even luxury models. Trade in that gas guzzler for a newer model and the savings in the long run will be well worth any initially increased costs of ownership.
