How To Get Rid Of Annoying Updates From Close Friends On Facebook

Facebook TipsAnnoying and unnecessary updates from your friend(s) are flooding your Facebook feed? Facebook is full of naive people who share almost everything irrespective of how stupid it is. You might have some friends who behave like idiots on Facebook by sharing ridiculously stupid things such as the photo of a hungry kid that says one like equals to one dollar or those “divine” photos where one has to like before 3 seconds. Some friends are so politically frustrated that they spend almost all day abusing the government or political parties with ridiculous logic. Of course the Facebook gamers (farmers, chefs, mafia kingpins, detectives etc) top the chart by asking a cow or garlic for their game progress. Imagine the horror if these kind of updates flood your smartphone if you use Facebook Home.

I too have some “share happy” friends who share almost everything within a timespan of 5-10 minutes. Even though the shared stuff is not one of the above mentioned idiotic stuff, it is frustrating to see the whole Facebook news feed to be filled by the updates from the same guy. While the best way to get rid of such annoying updates on Facebook is to hide the updates from them.

But wait a sec! Are they not your close friends? You do want to get some (important) updates from them to know what they are doing or if there is something really important news from their side. Hiding them would not serve the purpose as it goes against the principal of Facebook and that is to socially connect with friends.

So if you want to get rid of the annoying and unnecessary updates from your friend but do want to receive the important announcements from them, here is a little trick that could help you.

How to get only important updates from friends on Facebook:

Click on the option from the right side of the post and choose Hide.

Get only important updates from Facebook friends

Once you hide the story, it gives you an option of Change what updates you get from XYZ. Click on this option.

Get rid of annoying updates on Facebook

Here you can choose what kind of option you want to receive from your friend. Bets would be to choose Only important.

You can also opt for Most updates. This will also reduce the activity of your friend in your news feed. I hope it helps you in keeping your friend with you and your Facebook news feed cleaner.

Google Drive Increases The Free Storage To 15 GB

Google will now provide 15 GB of free cloud storage that will be shared between Gmail, Google Drive and Google Plus. Google announced in a blog post that this step will bring more seamless experience across various Google products.

Google Drive gets 15 GB of free storage

Earlier Google Drive had only 5Gb of free storage while Gmail had 10 Gb of free storage. While an average usage of Gmail falls around 2 Gb, rest of 8Gb is almost useless. But with the new unification, this could be very well used in Google Drive. This new scheme applies to your purchased additional storage as well. It means if you had bought 25GB of storage in Gmail, you can use it in Google Drive as well.

What about Google Plus picture storage?

Now, this brings us to this very important question. Does Google Plus have unlimited storage? If 15Gb is to share between Gmail, Google Drive and Google Plus pictures, it clearly is an indicator that Google Plus does not have unlimited storage. When Google Plus was first launched, many people used it to extend the free storage of their Picasa account to unlimited. But as observed by this guy, it was never unlimited and it gave storage full warning at 7.6 Gb data.

If you are not an addict to Google Plus, this new unification of storage should not be affecting you at all. In fact now you can use the extra unused storage from Gmail to Google Drive. You can see the usage in your in nice graphical manner. The changes will start rolling in next few weeks therefore you have to wait for sometime, depending on you geographic location.

Ubuntu 13.10 Release Schedule

Ubuntu 13.10 Release Schedule

Ubuntu 13.04 has been released last month. I hope you are enjoying the new features in Ubuntu 13.04. As Ubuntu releases a new version every six months, Ubuntu 13.10 will be released, traditionally, in October 2013. Ubuntu 13.01 has been named Saucy Salamander and despite the speculation, it is not a rolling release. If you are an enthusiast. you should add the Ubuntu 13.10 release schedule to your calendar.

  • Alpha 1 – June 20th
  • Alpha 2 – July 18th
  • Alpha 3 – August 1st
  • Beta 1- September 5th
  • Final Beta – September 26th
  • Release Candidate – October 10th
  • Final Release – October 17th

One of the changes that you might have noticed is that there is only one beta version in Ubuntu 13.10 release schedule. This is different from the tradition of having two betas before the release.

Anonymous Now Plans To attack US Banks, Institutions

anonymous

Hacking group Anonymous has threatened of another hacking attack and this time the target is USA. Anonymous announced OperationUSA (#OpUSA) and targets mainly US banks and institutions. The attack, according to Anonymous, would be a response to social and political injustices. The group said:

“America you have committed multiple war crimes in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and recently you have committed war crimes in your own country. …Now it is our time for our Lulz (fun),”

Anonymous rhetorically bragged: “We will now wipe you off the cyber map“. Considering how miserably it failed in wiping off Israel from cyberspace in OpIsrael attack, it seems unlikely that they are capable of “destruction”.

But why take risk? The typical Anonymous attack consists of distributed-denial-of-service attack along with DNS attacks, redirects, database leaks etc.  Possible targets in USA should be working closely with network security teams to thwart the incoming attacks.

How To Take Screenshot In Kindle Fire HD [Quick Tip]

Amazon Kindle Fire HDAamzon launched a low cost tablet series named Kindle Fire last year. The tablet has been a decent hit among those would not spend a lot on tablets like iPad or Galaxy. If you own one and wondering how to take screenshot in Kindle Fire, you need not to buy/download any dedicated app for this. Taking screenshot in Kindle Fire is almost similar to taking screenshot in Samsung Galaxy.

To take screenshot in Kindle Fire, all you have to do is:

Press the volume down button and the power button at (almost) same time and hold them together for around 1-2 second.

And nothing else. You will see an effect of screenshot being taken. You can view the saved screenshots in Photos->Device->Screenshot location. You can retrieve the photos by connecting it to a computer.

Get $10,000 For Downloading 50 Billionth App Today

The download counter on App Store is about to reach 50 Billion mark. And to celebrate that Apple is offering $10,000 in iTunes gift card to the lucky person who manages to download the 50 billionth app.

Apple has celebrated such milestone earlier as well. Previously, when the app download counter reached 10 billion and 25 billion, Apple generously awarded $10,000 iTune gift hamper. But this time, there is more to just $10,000. If you miss the 50 billionth app, you still have a chance to win. Any one who manages to downland among first 50 apps after 50 billionth download, will get $500 gift card.

And all this is bound to happen tonight (or today, depending upon your geo-location). Interestingly, app download hit is increased exponentially. 10 billion download milestone was reached on 14 January 2011 and it hit 25 billion mark on 2 March 2012.

Apple 50 Billion App Download

If you don’t know when you should buy/download the app, check the real time counter at Apple store which is running at a speed of more than 1000 downloads per second (at the time when this article is being written).

How To Use Formatting Option In New Gmail [Quick Tip]

Google made it mandatory to use the new “compose” look in Gmail. While the aim of this new look is to provide user a distract free way of composing email, so that the user can create a new mail while reading the current one. But “change” is always confusing, at least in the beginning. And more often than not, the obvious is not that obvious.

The new Gmail compose option left users baffled as there is no (easily visible) formatting option such as font, font size, alignment, bullet points, emoticons etc. Only attachment option is visible on the face of it. This makes a user wonder where is the format option in the new Gmail?

Format Option In New Gmail

Best guess for it to be found is at the bottom. The bottom panel shows three things: letter A, Attachment option and a plus sign (+). More obvious guees to find the format option is to click on the Plus sign (symbolically for more options). But hovering the mouse over the Plus sign sign merely gives few new options such as adding from Google Drive, photo, hyperlink, emoticon and invitations. No sign of format option here as well.

Format Option In New Gmail

Let me show you where exactly is the format option. It is the letter A that hides it. If you hover the mouse over it, should see it. Click on the A and you’ll get different formatting options of putting bullet points, aligning the text, increasing the font size and changing the fonts.

Format Option In New Gmail
I hope it helps you to use the format option in new Gmail.
