How To format Unformatable Virus Infected Pen Drives?

There was a time when we used to use compact disks (CDs) to transfer data from one system to another. A CD can store data up to 700MB. We still use disks for quick transfer of data but now we have another option of USB Drive or “Pen Drive” which is better and provides larger storage capacities. But sometimes these pen drives show formatting errors when we use them again and again. It happens at least once to everyone (unless you lose your USB key before) that when we try to format the pen drive, it fails. We try again and again by re-attaching the pen drive with the system but all we see is error. But you don’t need to worry anymore because in this article I’ll be showing you the simplest method to format virus infected pen drives.

Cause:

There are two main reasons behind these formatting errors:

The most common error we face is that the files which are stored in the pen drive are being used by the system in which we try to format (see the image below). The reason behind such an error is virus. One should always try keep USB drive safe from virus.

The other reason could be that there’s some hardware damage inside the Pen Drive. Obviously there’s no way to correct an internally damaged and broken pen drive. You better buy another one.

Method to format unformatable (Virus infected) Pen Drives:

The method I’ll be showing you is really simple. We’ll use the Command Prompt and enter some commands. And we’ll be done! So let’s get started.

Go to Start and type “cmd” in the search space. Open the Command Prompt, the “cmd” file you’ll see in the search results.
In the Command Prompt, type the command:

format G:
 
```
And press enter. In my case the drive letter of my Pen Drive is “G”. So instead of “G” in the above command, type the drive letter of your Pen Drive (see the image below).

Now Command Prompt will ask you to type the volume label (name) of the drive. Type the name correctly and press enter. In my case it is “games”. So I’ll type:

 games
```

At the end, Command Prompt will show you a warning that all the data of the drive you entered will be lost. Type “Y” and press enter. Now your Pen Drive is fully formatted. No data and No virus or anything.

So this was a really simple way to format virus infected unformatable Pen drives. There’s something to note that you can use this method to format any Drive on your system. Just enter the drive letter and volume label of the drive you want format and your drive will be formatted.

There’s also another way to format un-format-able or virus infected pen drives. Which is by using a third-party software. The software is “Unlocker”. This software will help you to bypass some of the restrictions on files and allow you to access those files. You can download this software from . After downloading the software, install it. Now right-click on the drive which you want to format and click on “Unlocker”. You’ll see the Unlocker Window which will show the files which are being used by the same system.

Click on “Unlock All”. After that, use the common procedure of formatting the drive i.e. right-click on drive and click on “Format”. The formatting will complete.

At the end I would like to advice my readers that they should take care of their pen drives. Instead of using them continuously again and again in hurry and pulling them out of the slot roughly, you should handle your pen drives with soft hands. Protective measures should be taken like safely removing the pen drive from your system before actually pulling out the pen drive out of the slot.

No matter how big your Hard Disk is, one day will definitely come when it’ll be completely full. And that day you’ll be dying to get some free space. There’s an option of buying another Hard Disk but many people can’t due to their own personal or financial reasons.

So I’m listing some effective ways by which you can free up some space for your important files or softwares by removing unwanted and unimportant files.

Disk Cleanup:

First step of cleaning space is “Disk Cleanup”. Windows provide us a built-in tool to delete the temporary files and unimportant data from the hard disk. You can access this tool by using any of the way below:
– Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup
or
– Got to “My Computer”, then right click on the Hard Drive you want free space from and click on “Properties”. You’ll see a window showing General properties by default. Click on “Disk Cleanup” button.
Now as you have accessed the Disk Cleanup tool, you’ll see the “Disk Cleanup” window scanning the hard drive. You can select the type of files you want to delete under “Files to delete:” option. Now click on “OK” and the cleaning process will start.
If the amount of space you gained is not enough for you, you can also clean up System Files. For that, click on “Clean up system files” button. A new tab will open showing two options to cleanup space. First is “Programs and Features” and second is “System Restore and Shadow Copies”. Click on “Clean up” button under second option of System Restore. This will remove all but the most recent restore point.
Disk Defragmentation:

“Disk Defragmentation” is something which makes your computer fast more efficient. It reduces the amount of fragmentation in file systems. You can access this tool from Start>All Programs>Accessories> System Tools>Disk Defragmentation. Now select the hard drive you want to defragment and click on “Defragment disk”. Defragmentation will start.
Delete Temporary Files:

Using “Disk Cleanup” is good to remove unnecessary files, but it does not delete the temporary files of other programs. A browser’s caches can consume large space of your hard disk, which Disc Cleaner can’t delete. So for such operations, use “CCleaner”.
You can download CCleaner from here. Install and launch the tool and then click on “Run Cleaner”. The CCleaner will clean all the temporary and junk files including the temporary files of any third party application.
Uninstall useless and space occupying Software and Applications:

It will be really effective to remove the useless applications. Some programs consume less space and some consume more. You can see a list of programs and applications of your computer and their size details too from “Program and Features” tool. You can find this tool in Control Panel.
But this list is not always accurate. Some programs may not show the exact size they actually use and in some cases, no size information at all. So in such case, it’s better to use third party software. I’m talking about a hard disk analysis programs, which scans all your hard disk and show you exactly that which folders and files using the more space. Those type of files too which Programs and Features can’t show.
There are many hard disk analysis tools available on the internet like SpaceSniffer, DiskSavvy, WinDirStat, TreeSize Free, Disktective etc. But in this guide I’ll be showing you about the tool I use i.e. “WiniDirstat”.
You can download WinDirStat from its official website. Install and launch the tool and then scan the hard drive. After complete scanning, you’ll see list of different files and folders with their exact details including the size. Now you can delete all the useless data and programs which you don’t use. Keep in mind that you don’t delete any important file.

Delete Duplicate Data:

There’s a possibility that you might have some duplicate files and folders in your hard disk. You can find such duplicate files by using any duplicate file finder tool. There are many tools available on the internet but once again I’ll showing you about the tool I use i.e. “dupeGuru”.
You can download dupeGuru from Hardcoded Software. This tool is available for both 32-bit and 64-bit windows users. Install and launch the application and then scan the hard drive. After complete scanning, you’ll see a list of all duplicate files. Now you can delete those files keeping only one of the two duplicate file.

Leave Less Drive Space for System Restore:

System Restore keeps the previous copies of files and restore points from which your computer restore from. But this feature may not be that important for you. If so, then you can reduce the amount of drive space usable for system restore.
Unlike Windows Vista where you’ll need to use a command line which is quite difficult, Windows 7 provides a very easy way of managing the drive space for system restore.For Windows 7 users:Right click on “My Computer” and select “Properties”. Now a System Panel will appear where you’ll have to click on “System Protection” on the left side.

A “System Properties” window will appear with “System Protection” tab by default. Now click on the hard drive you want to manage disk space of and then click on the “Configure” button.
Now you’ll see another window where you can manage “Restore Settings” and “Disk Space Usage”. You can “Turn off the system protection” or change to “Only restore previous versions of files”. Using the slider in font off “Max Usage:” you can reduce the drive space usable for system restore. You’ll also see a “Delete” button which is to delete all restore points, but we’ve already done it “Disk Cleanup”.
For Windows Vista users: You need to open Command Prompt in administrator mode. Click on “Start” and type “cmd” in search bar. Open the Command Prompt “cmd” listed in search results. Right click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator. Your Command Prompt may already be running as Administrator by default.
Now Type: vssadmin list shadowstorage
You’ll get all the information about how much space system restore is using. Now to change the disk space for system restore,
Type: vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /For=C: /On=C: /Maxsize=2GB
In the above command, you can change the “For” and “On” drives and “Maxsize” accordingly.

Recapping Your Motherboard

Capacitors in motherboards

Capacitors are electrical devices that are primarily used in electronic circuits to store electrical charge. The construction of a capacitor involves two electrical conductors separated by a dielectric. The motherboard, a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) holding crucial electronic components of the computer systems, contains electrolytic capacitors. Tantalum capacitors are used to filter out noise on the power supply lines. They are used as a part of Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) to ensure delivery of smooth regulated power to the CPU so that it operates correctly.

Bad capacitors

Capacitor plague is a problem which arises due to failure of electrolytic capacitors. If the electrolyte used is poorly formulated it turns bad after some time and causes excessive internal heating. This heat in turn causes swelling of the capacitor and leakage of the electrolyte. In severe cases, the capacitor explodes.

Identifying the faulty capacitors

If the motherboard is having bad capacitors, the problem can be easily identified by observing some system faults or physical faults. The most common operational sign is that the computer and making memory errors and spontaneous reboots. Moreover, physical signs include irregular bulging of the peak of the capacitor, brown ooze and strange odor.

Recapping

Once bad capacitors are identified, they can be replaced by performing a labor intensive task. Replacing of motherboard capacitors is generally referred to as ‘recapping’.

Equipment required

The first essential step for recapping is to gather the right equipment, the unavailability of which may cause serious damage to the motherboard. Gloves, soldering iron, cutting plier, safety glasses, rosin core solder and required quantity of new and adequate value replacement capacitors should be available before start equipping motherboard with new capacitors.

Marking bad capacitors

Next, the motherboard should be explored carefully for bulging or oozing capacitors.

Making a schematic

One very important thing to be kept in mind while obtaining the new capacitors is that they should be of the same capacitance rating as the ones that are to be removed. Before desoldering is started, it is required to note the direction of the gray colored band on the capacitors carefully. The best practice is to make a diagram of the position and value of the capacitors.

Prepare the board

There are also chances that bad capacitors may burst while removing so eye protection should be put on. Also, CPU, RAM, Heat Sink/Fan, cards and all such devices should be removed from the board. The board should be cleaned.

Removing bad capacitors

Once all the precautionary measures have been taken, bad capacitors can be desoldered. In order to remove the capacitor, its leads should be heated one at a time at the rear of the board such that the soldering iron is in contact with the lead and the pad around the hole. The capacitor can be pushed and removed from the board then. This process requires the iron to be hot enough. The holes on the board should be cleaned before inserting the leads of the new capacitor. The diagram should be checked for placing the new capacitors with correct polarity.

Equipping the board with new capacitors

The leads of the capacitors should be neatly soldered by feeding small amount of solder into the holes. Excessive care should be taken to avoid making motherboard connections short. Once soldered, the leads should be clipped at the rear of the board. Next, the removed devices should be placed back and power can applied to test if the process of recapping was fruitful.

Printers Through The Ages: A Look In To The History

Printing has been around in one form or another for hundreds of years. Check out how it’s evolved below:

Printers Past To Present

Wood block printing was a revolutionary breakthrough in China around the year 990. This printing method consisted of carving images and book pages from blocks of wood. Since only one page or image could be produced at a time, the process was painstakingly slow.

In 1040, the Chinese discovered moveable-type. This allowed for easier printing of characters or letters for books. This system would eventually find its way to a very intriguing man in Europe about 400 years later.

Printing Press

Moveable Type

Johannes Gutenberg took the idea of the moveable-type and went a large step further when he developed the printing press. Using a matrix, which is basically a mold for casting the alphabet in sequences, he created a system that would allow for mass production of prints, books, and papers and would eventually lead to our modern printing system.

Rotary Press

The rotary press was a step forward that allowed for printing on a larger number of media, including paper, cardboard, and plastic. The rotary method made it possible to print on a continuous roll that of which was fed sheet by sheet. This was sometimes called web pressing. Created by Richard March Hoe in 1843, this method set the stage for printing types that we still use today. Offset printing is still a widely used form of rotary type press and is also used for most of the printed images we see today.

Photocopying

The photocopier using xerography technology came about around 1959 and took off in offices around the world. This process allowed for multiple copies to be made of an original printed document in just seconds.

The process uses a combination of electrostatic charges on a light sensitive photoreceptor that then attracts and transfers toner particles onto paper. Then heat and pressure will complete the tone and you have your copy shooting out the other end. This method would soon meet its digital match and begin to decline partially due to the paperless office movement.

Dot Matrix Printing

These computer printers are still some of the favorites of today because of their ability to create different fonts and graphics. Created in 1970 with similar technology to a typewriter, dot matrix printing it is an impact method, where the print head runs back and forth on the page and strikes an ink-soaked cloth ribbon against the paper, only in this case, speed is a great factor.

Each dot is produced by a tiny metal rod, also called a “wire” or “pin” that is driven forward by electromagnetic force to create the letters on a page. With this method, the single vertical line of dot making pieces will actually print one line at a time, as compared to a typewriter where one letter is all that can be produced at a time.

Digital Printing

Inkjet Printers

The inkjet era swept the industry during the late 1970s with machines that sold very inexpensively to households as well as to companies where professional models cost tens of thousands of dollars. Though the actual concept itself dates back to the mid 19th century it wasn’t until the early 1950s when it was more embellished upon. There were only a select few manufacturers and they had the market in their palms in the 70s but the model was soon to be outdone.

The technology was simple and produced even better results than the impact printing methods that preceded it and it was faster. With this method, the ink is sprayed in very fine droplet form onto the paper and then air dried. The downside to this method is the cost – when the ink runs out, so does the printing. The ink comes in cartridges and it’s extremely pricy. This one downfall would spawn extra research related to Xeroxing that would lead printing into an entire new realm of possibility.

Laser Printers

The laser printer was actually technology developed through modifications of the xerographic copier. In 1971 the first laser printer was made by Xerox but it wasn’t until 1981 when the Xerox Star 8010 was released to the public for use with an individual computer. This completely revolutionized the way printing was done in business but it wouldn’t be until personal computers became more widely used when the mass marketed HP LaserJet was released in 1984 and quickly found itself in almost every business in America in some form or another.

The process of laser printing is a very fast and high quality text producing method that uses a laser beam that scans directly across the printer’s photoreceptor. The benefits over ink or toner beyond the cost, is that it doesn’t run out and there is no possibility of ink dripping or smudging. Laser printers have taken over the work place. 3D Printing

Ah, the finale. What would life be like without 3D printing? Personally, I have yet to see 3D printing in person, but the concept is completely fascinating. This type of printing has broken bounds related to many different industries and fields including engineering, architecture, industrial design, aerospace, footwear, dental and medical industries, and the list goes on.

Basically, the machine reads a design that has already been created and while using a series of cross sections designed in a CAD program it layers a liquid powder or sheet material to build or “print” the model. With the detail that is put into a process like this, it can take up to several hours or even days to complete in some situations. But the finished product is almost an exact replica of what is to be.

Printing has come a long way since the early centuries and hasn’t found a stopping point yet. It will be interesting to see what there might be room for after 3D printing or if there really is another step to be taken aside from perfecting the art.

It could have been a good idea to provide a free version of Zulu for at least individual users. In first few tries, Zulu seems more like Box. I could not try it with a large amount of data as I only tried the demo version, but it still seems to be keeping the promises. Small business users can give it a try as the 50 GB hardly costs $10 per month.
