Best Projects of CES 2013

Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is considered as one of the best tech event of the year and it’s time to look at the best projects of this year after passing an incredible week.

Razer Edge

razer edge

Razer announced Project Fiona (PC gaming tablet) back in CES 2012. This year, the company showed an almost complete version of that idea, the Razer Edge Pro gaming system. It’s a Windows 8 based gaming tablet with 10.1-inch screen that offers an Nvidia mobile graphics card and an Intel processor depending on the model you purchase. If you want the Edge, you will get a Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, Nvidia GT640M LE GPU and 64GB SSD. The Edge Pro offers Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM and optional 128GB or 256GB SSD. To completely enjoy this gaming tablet, you have to spend an extra $249.99 to buy the Gamepad Controller. You can also buy the keyboard dock with illuminated keys for $199 and a docking station for $69 to extend its battery life.

Razer is planning to release the Razer Edge in the first quarter of this year for $999 and the Edge Pro for $1,299.

Project Shield

project_shield_v2b

No, you are not looking at a smartphone attached to a game controller. Its Nvidia’s new Android gaming handheld called Project Shield. Android gaming devices are nothing new nowadays but this one offers something special: users can also play PC games in this Android based gaming console. The device features Nvidia’s latest Tegra 4 chip to make sure users enjoy smooth gaming performance. You can access to your PC games via your home wireless network and then Tegra 4 will decode the high quality video and let you play your PC games smoothly. Moreover, you can use this gaming device just like any other Android smartphone or tablet for watching videos, enjoying music or browsing internet.

We don’t know much about the price yet but the device will be available in the second quarter of this year.

Tactus Morphing Touchscreen

tactile

If you are one of those touchscreen users who miss the feeling of a real keyboard, here is a good news for you! Tactus Technology displayed its morphing touchscreen technology that can actually turn a touch screen into a morphing physical keyboard. The company showed an early prototype of this technology back in June last year but now the company is ready with a 7-inch tablet fully-integrated with Tactus tactile touchscreen technology. Physical keys will rise up from the screen on demand and then disappear when it’s not required. However, users will be able to sense touch but not the sense of being pressed.

The project is still in prototype phase and the company is hoping to release the technology later this year.

HAPILABS HAPIfork

hapiforks

HAPILABS unveiled HAPIfork, the world’s first smart fork that can help you to bring a change in your eating behavior. The smart forks and spoons are expected to be available in April and will cost about $99 each.

Oculus Rift

oculus rift

Oculus Rift is another cool gaming gadget that offers a new way to enjoy video games. This virtual reality headset is very light and can make users feel like they are in a different world or in an alternate reality. It’s still a work in progress and now the company is selling it as a part of a developer kit for $300.

Samsung T9000

android fridge

Samsung unveiled a 32-cubic-feet Four-door refrigerator titled as “the home entertainer’s ultimate refrigerator”. Why are we talking about a refrigerator here? Because this refrigerator comes with a big LCD display and Android OS. Now you can enjoy social networking, playing games and Evernote integration right in your refrigerator. The company didn’t reveal its price and launch date yet.

Cookoo Watch

cookoo

We’ve seen smart watches before but Cookoo is slightly different. This smart watch can receive signals via Bluetooth from your cell phone and alert you for calls, calendar reminders, low battery and Facebook notifications. The phone runs for a year using a standard button-cell battery unlike other smart watches.

You can order this watch from Cookoo’s website for $130 or grab one from AT&T’s flagship store in Chicago. However, if you want to talk or check Facebook updates directly using your watches, this one is not for you.

[Review] Facebook Page Manager For Android. Is It Worth A Download?

If you are (or ever were) an admin of a Facebook page, you must be aware of the pain an admin goes through in managing the page through his/her mobile. The world is relying more and more on mobile devices. which means more than half of the Facebook users access it via mobile. Which also means many of the Facebook Page managers also access it via mobile.

As an admin to several Facebook pages, I always felt a need for a more controlled approach to the Facebook pages on mobile. When I first heard that Facebook is releasing its own Facebook Page Manager Android app solely for managing Facebook Pages, I was ecstatic. After some time fiddling with it, I came up with this review. Lets fond out what the Facebook Page Manager can do and how it fared on the expectation.

Facebook Page Manager

The Interface:

The interface and the interactivity of the Facebook Page Manager is similar to the new look of official Facebook Android app. Once you have logged in to the app, you can see all of your pages for which you are an admin by clicking on the menu on top left. This is nothing new as one can do the same in the simple Facebook app.

Facebook_Page_Manager_8

Once you choose your page, you can see all the new likes, messages and the user activities in the top notification area, very similar to how you use the Facebook app for your personal profile. You can update status and share photos from here.

Facebook_Page_Manager_1

On the top right corner, there is a filter that gives you access to choose between posts by page and posts by fans. In the simple Facebook page, this option was available via links.

Facebook_Page_Manager_2

Comment viewing section is same as what we have seen in the new Facebook app. When you click on comments, it opens a new ‘window’ on the top of existing one:

Facebook_Page_Manager_5

You can delete a post just by swiping your fingers across the screen. Once we have seen the interface and the look of the Facebook Page Manager, it is time to see the highs and lows of this app.

What’s Hot?

Page Insights:

The best thing about Facebook Page Manager is that it provides the insights about the posts and statuses akin to the web version. The “reach” started showing under a posts since the time Facebook started forcing page owners to pay to reach more fans (among the existing only, not new). You can see how many people your post reached in this new app.

Facebook_Page_Manager_3

Apart from showing the “reach”, it also shows the detailed insights. The “View Insights” gives the critical details about the post. Very helpful for targeted campaigns. If you promote your post, those insights will also be accessible.

Facebook_Page_Manager_4

Notifications:

Based on your Facebook page settings, it also notifies you of new user likes and comments on the page. May not be a good option for pages with tens of thousands fans with hundreds of active users.

Facebook_Page_Manager_6

Whats Not?

If you think that with Facebook Page Manager on your Android phone, you don’t need to log in to the web version, you are wrong. Facebook Page Manager is missing lots of crucial features important to a page admin.

No option to delete a comment and ban a user:

Every now and then we, page admins, came across unruly, rude and misbehaving fans. Surprisingly, while you can delete a Facebook comment from your page on mobile with the simple Facebook app, the Page Manager does not have this option (at present). No prizes for guessing that you cannot ban/un-ban a user.

No tagging in comment section:

When you use the web version, you can tag a user (who have commented on the post earlier) in the comment section. Unfortunately, there is no such service available in the Facebook Page Manager.

Facebook_Page_Manager_7

Obviously if you are looking for a way to share or download images from Facebook on mobile for your page, you will be disappointed again.

Verdict:

Facebook Page Manager is helpful for people who are more in to the statistics of their campaigns but as far as a normal Facebook Page admin is concerned, it does not offer much. Most of the features such as posts by fans, update status, photos and commenting is already available on normal Facebook apps. The new Facebook App Manager is missing some important features. No doubt that this app has been designed by an intern and it seems like the intern went back to defend his thesis 😛 I hope to see the missing crucial features in later versions. Till then it is up to you to use it or avoid it.

Sony Announces Xperia Z: A Waterproof Galaxy S3 Killer

Sony’s new flagship Android device is here! The company introduced its latest Xperia device at Sony’s CES press conference yesterday. Taking a look at the feature, it can surely be termed as a rival to Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5. The new smartphone comes with some incredible features like 1080p reality display, 13-megapixel camera and is water-resistant. It’s not really a phone that you can take with you when you are swimming but it surely is going to survive if you spill a bottle of water on it.

Sony Xperia Z Waterproof

5-inch Screen and 13-MP Camera

The big 5-inch screen is capable of showing full-1080p “reality” display. The smartphone also features a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor to provide smooth Jelly Bean performance and a 13-megapixel camera packed with Sony’s latest Exmor RS sensor. Sony used their Exmor RS sensor for the first time in a smartphone and we are expecting to see improved low-light performance. The front-facing camera also comes with Exmor R sensor.

Once you are done recording or capturing pictures, you can see them in its 5-inch TFT Reality Display that packs the Bravia Mobile Engine 2 for augmenting colors and contrast on the clips. So, if you are thinking about watching movies or your recorded video clips, you are going to love the sharp display at 443 ppi. And the best thing here is, the smartphone is only 7.9 millimeters thick.

Sony UI

The latest flagship device by Sony features a lightweight Sony UI. All the ugly widget animations we saw before in previous Xperia devices are now slightly better and the company is not even going to name the UI.

Battery Life

Sony didn’t reveal much about the smartphone’s battery life in the press conference but there is a feature to improve its standby time called “stamina” mode. This mode can automatically shut down all your battery-draining apps and can also bring them back when you turn on your screen. When the mode is active, the standard calling feature and SMS is the only thing that will work.

Operating System and Other Features

The smartphone will be packed with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (not the upcoming Android 4.2 version). However, the company will offer upgrades to 4.2 later. It also features 2GB RAM and the latest NFC (near-field communication) technology. Using the near-field communication technology, users will be able to send music to speaker, share audio or video files with other NFC supported devices and much more.

Summary of features:

  • 1.5 GHz  quad-core processor
  • 1080p HD 5-inch display
  • HDR Video recording
  • OS: Android 4.1
  • 13.1MP main camera, 2.2MP front-facing camera
  • 4G/LTE
  • 2GB RAM
  • NFC
  • Water and dust resistant
  • Dimensions: 139 x 71 x 7.9mm
  • Up to 16GB Memory; expandable up to 32GB

Availability

We still don’t have any specific U.S. release date or any data about carrier or price yet. But we do know that Sony is thinking about a global launch in the first quarter of 2013. Looks like we have to wait for a rumor, leaked specs or the global launch to know more about the device.

How to restore factory settings on the Samsung Galaxy S II

If your Android phone freezes frequently, running slow and drains the battery very quickly, restoring to default factory settings might be useful. I had problems with my one year old Samsung Galaxy S2 which used to hand very frequently while using web browsers and after the Ice Cream Sandwich update, the battery used to drain completely in 2-3 hours. In this tutorial we will see how to restore factory setting on your Samsung Galaxy S2 phone. You can use it for other android phones as well.

Before proceeding, please backup your data on the phone.

Step 1:

Turn off your phone. In case it is hanged, remove the battery and thus turn it off.

Step 2:

Now, with the phone off, hold down the PowerVolume Up and Menu buttons simultaneously for approx. 10 seconds. Release the buttons when you see the android logo on the screen. This will bring us to the boot menu which in looks is similar to Linux boot menu.

Step 3:

In the boot menu, use the volume button to navigate up and down between the options. Select option of Wipe Data/Factory Reset. When prompted, select ‘Yes – Delete All User Data‘. It will take couple of minutes.

Samsung Galaxy Hard Reset To Factory Settings

Step 4:

Once the reset process is done, you will be back on the boot menu. Now choose the Reboot System Now option. You have successfully restored your phone to factory settings. Now you will be asked to follow instructions as you were asked the first time you used your phone.

Tip to save battery life:

If you were suffering from extremely fast battery drain, avoid installing all the apps back from your Google accounts. This is because most of the some incompatible app is responsible for the battery drain and you may never find out which one. So if you can, then avoid restoring your apps. This might be painful, but trust me, my phone battery now easily lasts 12-16 hours even if I use the data connection.

[Review] GCloud: A Painless Way To Back Up Your Android Data In Cloud

GCloud Android App LogoThe worst thing about loosing your phone is that you lose all your contacts along with your huge chunk of favorite and cherished messages and pictures. Of course losing the expensive phone costs you the money but losing the contacts and other settings are additional pain in *some part of your body*. While there are many free Android phone tracking apps available that could help you recovering your phone but there are high chances that you would have lost your phone data.

And believe me, loosing your phone is not the only way you could lose your data. So what can you do to avoid setting your Facebook status to “Friends, I lost my phone please send me your phone numbers”? Answer is simple: Backup your data.

I have several apps that takes the task of backing up your Android phone data to save your behind in rough times. In this post we will see a new app that backs up your data in cloud.

What is GCloud and how it works?

is a new app available in Play store that provides you with an easy (we will see how easy) way to back up your phone data. The available for free in the store and that is first among many good things. When you download it and use it first time, it gives you the option of creating an account on GCloud:

Gcloud-Welcome-Screen

Effortless Backup Process:

Once you register for a new account, considering you are a new user, you will be asked to choose the things to include in the backup. The free version of app provide you with 1 GB of free cloud space. This is more than sufficient to back up your contacts, messages, call logs and system settings.

GCloud-Backup_options

Once you choose the things to back up, you can forget all about it. By default, it backs up the data automatically once in a day when you connect to Wi-Fi. You can start the backup anytime by choosing it from the dashboard.

GCloud-Backup-3

Equally Effortless Restore:

Dashboard also provides you the option of restore, You can be selective while restoring and choose to restore only the required part of backup instead of all. Another good thing, eh? The restore does not take long and is, again, painless.

If you lose or change your device, you just need to install GCloud on the new Android phone and you will have all the saved data and settings back in your new phone.

Is GCloud worth downloading?

Before I say yes, I would give you enough reasons to justify my answer. There are several ways to back up your Android phone data. Google account is one of the most preferred way of backing contacts for many people. Dropbox provides 3 GB of free cloud space to back up your camera pictures and so does Ubuntu One. In fact there are many more ways to automatically backup your camera phone photos but these are good for backing up pictures not for contacts and messages. There is also GoMessage to back up your message but what makes it useful that you could have multiple things to backup in one app and that too completely automatic.

Salient Features:

  • 1 GB of free cloud storage
  • Fully automatic backup. Use it once and forget about it.
  • Backs up your text message, contacts, phone settings.
  • Selective backup and restore

If you think 1 GB is not good enough for you, you can upgrade it to pro version and you can have 10 GB for $0.99 per month or unlimited space for $3.99 per month.

My verdict is that GCloud is one of the nice free app that should be in your list of “good to have” apps, ig not in “must have apps” list. Give it a try. It does not cost you anything (other than some data usage).

5 Questions Answered On Which Gadget To Buy This Festive Season iPhone 5, iPad mini or Microsoft surface?

November and December are the months when people across globe celebrate festivals and make merry by buying electronics either for personal use or to gift to their loved ones. Since the market at present is flooded with endless goods and gadgets making a choice becomes very difficult. The brand, cost, features, operating system, usability and the purpose of buying such devices are all accountable to making the best possible decision. You have multipurpose smart phones, tablets, budget tablets, and OS specific gadgets to choose from (let’s leave laptops alone as of now!).

Here is a simple list of selected gadgets you might want to consider for your next buy followed by some guidelines on how to make your decision in the form of questions and answers:

  1. Apple’s – iPhone 5, iPad 3 and  iPad Mini
  2. Google’s- Endless Android mobile phones and  Nexus 7 Tablet
  3. Amazon’s- Kindle Fire HD
  4. Samsung’s- Galaxy Series Mobile Phones, Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Note
  5. Omnia’s W Phone
  6. Microsoft’s- Windows 8 Mobile Phones and Microsoft Surface
  7. Motorola’s- Xoom and Razr XT910 Phone
  8. Nokia’s- Lumia 800, E6 and 808 Pure View Phones
  9. Acer’s- Iconia Tab
  10. HTC’s- One X, Radar and One S Phones
  11. LG’s- Optimus 4X HD
  12. Sony’s- Tablet S
  13. Xperia S and Xperia Go Phones
  14. Black Berry’s- iberry Auxus AX02, Playbook Tablet and Bold Touch 9900
  15. Asus’s- Eee Pad Transformer TF101G and Eee Pad Slider

You have to keep several factors in mind or else you will end up buying on of the most useless gadgets of all time. It’s time to mind map and find answers to some of the common questions, here we go.

Q1- So the first question that arises is- Who is the big-boss of them all?
Is it Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung, Microsoft, Acer, Sony or Motorola?

A-  As far as I believe, there is no such big-boss or maybe there is one! But that does not really matter. The best might not be the right fit for you. Yes, I mean it. The best of them all might be offering the most aspired device but that might actually be of little use for you and your needs.

Whether you are considering buying a product from one of these companies to fulfil your professional needs or you are buying one from a brand just for fun is what matters. Your needs must be in-line with the features offered by the device and the price you are paying for the gadget. More over it must be affordable for you and so you must literally try to get more for as little money as possible when it comes to economical buy!

Hence, all the guys mentioned above have something nice to offer in the range for what you are looking for. The ball is in your court now.

Q2- Which touch screen gadget serves you the best and add value to your money?

A-  First of all decide and be clear of what type of gadget you are interested in i.e. a smart phone or a tablet computer or a luxury touch screen device. For example- A smart phone with touch screen loaded with reasonable OS can be your best bet over choosing a tablet if you are looking for a gadget that meets your phone requirements as well as assist you with rich features like navigation, gaming, 3G accessibility, among other features you are looking for. You are getting everything you are aspiring to buy, you are getting all of them in one device and also you are paying little less than what you might pay for unwanted features by choosing a tablet against your requirements.

Q3- Which hardware and Operating System should I choose?

A-  There are two aspects of choosing the modern day’s touch screen devices. One is the hardware i.e. which handset or tablet brand should you go for and the other is the software namely the Operating System i.e. iOS, Android or Windows 8. iOS is specific to Apple devices only i.e. if you want iOS operating System then you ought go for Apple’s hardware. Whereas if you choose to buy devices with Android OS then you will have a range of choices as far as the hardware brand is concerned. Google, Samsung, HTC, etc all have smart phones and tablets with Android OS. Same is the case with Microsoft’s new Windows 8 OS.

Therefore it becomes crucial to decide on which Operating System you would like to go with so that you can choose the hardware wisely.

Q4- Are you buying a device for your personal use or for a small company that you run or for your family?

A-  Be very clear about whom is this device meant for and what age group people would be using the gadget. For example: Your tablet will perhaps be used by your wife and your kids if your option is to buy a tablet for your family. Kids these days are smart and even toddlers are not to be taken lightly when it comes to using touch screen gadgets. You are using it for fun and work, your wife would use it to browse the internet and play and your children would use it for education purpose and gaming.

So, the versatility and usability becomes the important part of your list of must have features. Likewise may be you need more prolific features if the device is meant for your personal use to meet your professional needs or something versatile would suit if the gadget is meant to be used by more than one person.

Q5- Finally, what is your budget?

A-  You have a list of features that a gadget must have for you to buy it but you have so little money to spend or you just don’t give a damn to how much it costs but you need the best you can get or maybe you are ready to stretch and your budget is flexible but are looking for something that adds value to your money. Whatever be your budget, the good news is most of you can own one device that fits you the best. Just be sure of how much you are ready to spend and what do you want for that much of money. It is also important to be ready with a list of things you may agree to compromise if need be so that you end up buying a device for the money you have.

Take an informed decision and be responsible for what you have decided. Whether you are paying less or more the truth is you are anyway paying a price. If you go for an economical gadget you may compromise on the product quality or features and if you are buying it for more money that’s it you have already paid a price with your bucks!
