Not everyone likes the sound at the time Ubuntu starts for some reason. In this post we will see how to disable start up sound in Ubuntu 11.10.
Go to the right top of corner of your screen and there choose Startup Applications…
Here clear the option of Gnome Login Sound:
Voila! You don’t need to listen to the start-up sound anymore. Enjoy

While the cyber world abuzz with Google+ hype, Facebook is having some troubles. I can witness some strange behaviour of Facebook (Is it a worldwide outage?) at the present moment (Its 8:05 PM CET). These are the things which I notice currently:

Seems like it was a maintenance outage. Facebook is back to normal.
One of the many common problems one faces after installing Ubuntu is sound problem. In this case sound seems to be working, you can hear it on headphones but there is no sound coming out of speakers. Trying using alsa-mixer gives the following error:
load hw:0 error: Invalid argument
The solution provided here works for HDA Intel Soundcard. To find the make of your laptop soundcard click here.
Try the following command in the terminal:
killall pulseaudioYou need to edit this file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and then add a line in its end. Use the following commands:
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf &Now add the following line at its end:
options snd-hda-intel model=genericNow reboot your computer. It should solve your problem. If the solution doesn’t work then try the Further Troubleshoot.
The term model = generic may not work in all the cases as sometimes it depends on the model of your sound card. Find your sound card here.
You can try replacing the word generic by the following words depending upon your laptop:

If you could still not found the model you may want to look for the correct value to be used in model in the following file /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/ALSA-Configuration.txt.gz. Unzip the file and look for your sound card. You may find values like this:
ALC260
hp HP machines
fujitsu Fujitsu S7020
Use the following command:
sudo gunzip /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/ALSA-Configuration.txt.gz; sudo gedit ALSA-Configuration.txt &

Wireless and Ubuntu never go hand in hand. No version of Ubuntu has worked out of box for all wireless hardware. This post is meant for people who has Centrino Wireless-N 1000 wireless adapter. If you do not know what is the make of your hardware, follow this link: Know your Network Adapter.

Now if you are still here I assume that you have a Centrino Wireless adapter from Intel. Run the following command:
sudo rfkill list 1: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no
2: acer-wireless: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no
Instead of acer-wireless, there may be other result as well. If it says Soft blocked: YES that means the wireless is turned off in software. Follow these solutions.
If you are connected to Ethernet (Wired Network) disconnect it and type this command:
sudo rfkill unblock all
sudo rfkill list allIf the above command does not solve the problem. Try with this command (replace the acer with your result in previous command output ):
sudo rmmod -f acer-wmi
sudo rfkill unblock all
sudo rfkill list allIf the above mentioned solution worked then you might want to make it permanent by amending a few lines in the configuration file so that you don’t need to type these commands again and again on each boot. Type the following commands (again replacing “acer”):
sudo su
echo "blacklist acer-wmi" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
