Coders knew Vim for the last twenty years for its unmatched efficiency in editing source code. Vim wasn’ t too popular in the Rails community until lately when Tim Pope published his plug-in: Rails.vim. This plug-in and Vims legendary extendibility made it the editor of choice of many programmers who used some proprietary applications in the past. The plug-in offers shortcuts for easy navigation between files, makes it possible to run scripts, generate controllers, views, do some refactoring, and do auto completion , all of these from Vims cosy interface. Some people say that it is the least user friendly text editor ever. While these accusations might be partly true, because of the rather steep learning curve, many programmers just liked the way Vim helped them do their work quickly and efficiently.
Enough said lets see how to create a very simple blog in Rails from Vim. [Read more…]
Report: Business Assessment report on RFID based University Degree Certification
I, along with my friends, did a small Business Assessment project in my Entrepreneurship course. We proposed for a new business venture of RFID based University Degree Certification. The Business Assessment was based on John Mullins Seven Domain approach which is very extensively explained in his book The New Business Road Test. The summary of the project is following:
The Degree Certificate awarded by a University is an asset of prime importance in an individual’s life. In this knowledge driven economy this testifies the certificate holders master in a subject and also carries with it the reputation of the institution which awarded it.
But cheating and forgeries have evolved along with the advance in technology. With numerous technologies to fake a document evolve the circulation of fake degree certificates has turned to be menace to the society, and a threat to the integrity of both the certificate holder and the educational institution that has awarded the certificate. This has lead to numerous cases of undeserving candidates occupying positions in companies and other institutions of repute which they are unqualified. Hence, there is a pressing need for universities to adopt a process that can ensure security of information and authenticity of the certificate issued.
The problem caused by technology has to be solved with technology. Our team has come up with a proposal to use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based solution, which enables the universities to curb the problem of fake degree certificates, forgery of mark sheets and also digitize the whole process of awarding certificates. The revolutionary technology enables university to award certificates with an embedded RFID tag that is encoded with the holder’s name, date of graduation, type of degree and entire transcript, photograph and biometrics (fingerprints), all digitally signed by the university authorities.
This revolutionary technology of embedding RFID tag into degree certificates is reliable, cheap to manufacture, and tamper free. Potential employers, foreign embassies, other universities and other stakeholders can read the data embedded in the RFID tag using an interrogator thus speeding up the service process.
