How To Search In Windows 8 Store [Quick Tip]

Continuing my journey with Windows 8, I stumbled across several hurdles such as how to shutdown Windows 8, or hibernate Windows 8 etc. One of the crucial feature of Windows 8 is its Windows store. It consists of cool apps for Windows 8, similar to iTunes and Google Play. Only little problem here, no obvious option to search for an app inside the store. In this quick tutorial we’ll see how to search in Windows 8 store.

Step 1:

When you are in Windows Store, hover the mouse to the top right or bottom right corner of the screen to access the settings menu. Click on the search icon:

Step 2:

When it gives you the option to search, type the keywords for the app you are looking for. As you start typing, Windows starts suggesting what app you might be looking for. In the picture below, I was looking for Evernote and I got several suggestions:

Facebook Graph Search: What Does It Mean To You

Back to the roots, Facebook’s Graph Search it is.

Facebook as it was first launched, was used by people to browse and learn about people and end up making new connections. Here it is back again rediscovering its roots through search again, this time its called “Graph Search”.

Graph search for facebook

What is Facebook graph Search?

Graph Search is a way for you to search and find people, photos, places and interests that are relevant to your search and your relationship with your friends on Facebook.

  1. Graph search is not same as the web search. It is mainly the search for content on Facebook which will give unique search results for each one depending on strength of relationship and connections.
  2. It’s in beta and available to small number of Facebook users in US. However, if you like to get it you can register to the waiting lists here

Why use Graph Search?

It’s easy and better because you don’t have to search individual friend’s profiles for information. You can get all the results for your search on latest happenings with your connections in one place.

  • You can search for photos, places, interests and people.
  • You can easily discover new people with similar interests and make new connections.
  • You can find places, restaurants and other local attractions based on your friends’ feeds, likes and shares including information from their history.
  • you can even get all the results about your friends’ favorite music bands, books or movies.
  • As an example, according to this report, you could even use this new feature for dating or recruiting as well.
  • For an average user this might not be a great hit, but businesses and leaders could definitely make use of it.

How is graph search different from web search?

Graph search was first rumored to be a competition to the king of internet the Google. But stop believing such rumors, it’s a completely different thing and in no way similar to the existing web search. Here are few things that make graph search different from web search.

Web search:

  • Keywords oriented
  • Provides links that could contain answers for your search
  • Mostly information that is available to the public on the web

Graph search:

  • You combine phrases and not keywords
  • You are provided with results rather than links
  • It is more private and you will be able to see the results in your search that you are able to see elsewhere on Facebook

Could this feature have any disadvantages?

As written on Gizmodo, you have every chance of being seen for all the wrong reasons on Facebook! All thanks to graph search.

  • You may have liked pages, status or photos in the past that may become the cause for embarrassment today on being seen on somebody’s search results under the wrong search phrases. Your likes may be due to the awesome content of the page or status but the literal meaning of them could ruin your Facebook reputation especially among your friends if you were ever caught for wrong search!
  • Your privacy may be at stake! May be, because the for graph search is not clear and at present its just waggly defined. Your private life on Facebook could be public in a moment of time if you do not pay close attention to what you share or like on Facebook and with whom? As a matter of fact, you may now want to look back into your profile for the history so you do not repent for it later.
  • Above all, the real benefits of this graph search itself is questionable? Why do you want to search this extensively and keep a watch on the database of friends in the first place? Is this whole thing of graph search required? An extensive research has been articulated on Techcrunch about why graph search is a miss? Only time and Mark Zuckarberg can answer I guess!

On the other hand, as a user, we may have to work hard for this graph search to become hit which is now far away from the success it claims to have one day. We may have to become more active check-in often, keep liking and updating status and also not just add photos but meticulously tag them to be found on search results (only if you like it to happen!).

The attempt of adding this feature in to encourage users to get more active or should I say proactive on this social networking site. It is an attempt to encourage people to grow their friends circle and add more and more friends quickly as the stats show the drop in expanding number of friends on an average which is crucial for Facebook’s growth in future.

Do you think graph search is really an essential user tool?

Using Google to Research Used Trailers Online

Used-Trailers-onlineAre you looking for a good, used heavy-duty or livestock trailer? Finding these items can be a problem, but using search engines such as Google can help you if you know the right search terms to use and what to look for in trailer ads.

Useful Search Tips

Using Google can be very effective, but finding the right search terms can be difficult. Remember these handy tips:

The More Specific Your Search, the More Specific Your Results

Currently, “used trailers” generates about 232 million results, including double-wide mobile homes and boat trailers; however, specifying “used aluminum livestock trailers” takes the number down to 322,000.

Of course, that is still too many results for you to look at each one, but you can also specify a geographic area: “used aluminum livestock trailers in Iowa” will show you more localized results, and “used aluminum livestock trailers for sale in Des Moines, Iowa,” limits your search to just over 30,000 hits.

If you have a specific brand name you are looking for, include it in your search. Additionally, if you know dimensions, you can also include those.

Shopping Tips

As you shop for a used trailer, take note of the information given in the ad. Does the owner include a picture? Is relevant contact information, such as a phone number or email, included with the ad?

Are the dimensions and other important facts obvious from reading the ad? Does the seller have a problem with you inspecting the vehicle, or is it being sold “as is?” If you have doubts, move on to another ad.

How to Compare Prices

Everyone is attracted to a low price, but remember your grandmother’s sage advice: “You get what you pay for.” That does not mean that you cannot find a good deal or haggle with the seller. However, it does mean that if someone is selling a “brand-new” trailer for hundreds less than older used models, something is probably wrong.

Find at least five likely ads and compare prices. You should not see more than ten percent difference among the prices; anything lower or higher may indicate a problem.

Be sure you understand exactly what the ad is offering for the suggested price as well; measurements and accessories are important factors to consider when you are looking at price.

Safety Precautions

There are a few safety tips to consider when you are shopping online. Whether you are male or female, old or young, there are certain safety precautions you should always take when considering an online purchase.

– Remember that you do not know who is on the “other end” of the computer. No matter what someone says, you have no proof the person is who you think until you meet. Do not divulge any unnecessary personal information.

– If possible, agree to meet in a public place to inspect the trailer. If the seller cannot bring the trailer to a meeting, take someone with you to the person’s home or business in order to inspect it.

If you must go alone, leave the name and address of the place you are going with a trusted person who can call you if you do not return when planned.

– Trading in cash allows you to haggle, but it also means that you must carry a relatively large amount of money with you.

If you already know that you are probably going to buy the item, ask the seller if he or she will take a check; if not, get a money order for the exact amount. If you must carry cash, leave it in an inconspicuous place, such as locked in your glove compartment, until the time to pay has come.

Following these simple tips will help you successfully shop for your trailer online and find just what you are looking for safely and effectively.

[update] News: Google changed its search home page with black header bar

The one thing which I noticed this morning was the a change in the looks of Google homepage. It has a black header from now onwards. This black bar can be seen by only a selected number of users (I am glad to be the among the “chosen ones”). The new look of Google homepage is rolled out with the much talked Google+. Apart from Google homepage, this black bar is visible in Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Picasa etc.  Chris Wiggins, Google’s digital creative director, quoted in his blog .

We’re working on a project to bring you a new and improved Google experience, and over the next few months, you’ll continue to see more updates to our look and feel.

He further added that it is an effort to provide a consistent experience irrespective of the Google product. Take a look at the screen shot:

My Reaction: It looks kinda distracting to me. Probably I am not used to it at present. It seems weird at the moment and equally annoying as the you tube with black screen or facebook pics with black background but (I hope) with time people will get used to it for sure. So be ready to face the change from Google as it is also bringing the much awaited Google social networking site Google+. Its raining change, Enjoy :)

Update:

Seems like Google has changed the decision of black bar in one day only (or are they still experimenting?). I do not see the black bar at the top instead it is replaced by a white bar and the there are some other changes in visuals as well. For eg.

  • The side bar at the search page (Which gives you option like everything, Images, Videos etc ) is now gray.
  • On the main page the link like advertisement, business solutions etc have been moved to the bottom of the page.
  • The Google Doodle is smaller in size now.
  • The Google Advanced Search Icon (with magnifying glass ) is now blue in color.

Take a look at the latest screenshots:

How to find all files containing specific text in Linux?

One of the common commands that I use most frequently in my day-to-day Linux life is for finding files that contains a particular text. Take for an example that I want to search all the files in the current directory that contains string “Hello! this is my file”. The command that is use mostly is this:

find . -type f -exec grep -il 'Hello! this is my file' {} ;

This search ignores the cases. If you want to search with definite cases (upper or lower) remove the “-i” from grep. You can replace “.” (dot, which means current directory) by the path of the directory in which you want to conduct the search. If you want to search in the whole system then use “/” (it means root directory).
