How to get the URL or Link of a Facebook post or status

Sometimes you may need to provide the URL/link of a Facebook post or status for eg. in case you are trying to win a contest or trying to attract more people to a Facebook post. Though Facebook has recently added a “Share” option for all the Facebook post but it still doesn’t serve the purpose in the case you need the to share the Post in a comment or outside Facebook environment. In this post I’ll show you how to get the URL of a Facebook post.

All you have to do is to go to post and click on the “Date-Time” of the post. Something like this:

Clicking on this “Date-Time” element will take you to the post in a new tab. And from there you can simply copy past the URL of the post. Something like this:

Now you can share the post anywhere with the help of the URL. By the way the same method can be used in Google Plus as well.

Questions and suggestions are welcomed.

How to solve: Dell AC Power Adapter Type Not Recognized

My AC power adapter charger for Dell Inspiron N4010 went into smokes two days back and I went to shop for a good (read cheap) alternate of it. After fiddling around a bit I settled for a “itworks” Universal Power Adapter (for 60 Euro sigh!). It comes with 12 plugs to use it with all the major laptop manufacturers and two type of power cords one for each North America and Europe. The below photograph is a not of my universal power adapter 😛

I went back and happily plugged the adapter into my laptop and switched it on. To my dismay, at boot time, it gave a warning message something like “AC Power Adapter type not recognized”. When I chose to ignore the warning and booted into the operating system, I saw the strange things with the battery icon. Despite of the adapter plugged in it was showing only 5% of battery left.

It took me some minutes to recognize my mistake, a blooper actually. This happens when you think you are too smart to ignore small details and turns out to be a fool.

As I said the Universal Power Adapter had a number of plugs for different manufacturers and it was numbered accordingly. In most foolish way I was using a plug meant for HP which somehow got fit into the socket. When I saw that and change it to the correct one the problem was solved.

Are you using the correct plug? Check it.

Ubuntu update error with Firefox

Problem:

Recently when Ubuntu Update Manager ran on my Ubuntu 11.04 for the latest update it generated following error:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/ubufox_0.9.1-0ubuntu0.10.04.1~mfn3_all.deb: trying to overwrite ‘/etc/xul-ext/ubufox.js’, which is also in package xul-ext-ubufox 0

Reason:

Probing a little further I found out that it is a problem in upgrading to Firefox 5.0 and this ubufox is a modified version of Firefox for Ubuntu.

Solution:

Follow these steps:

  • Open Synaptic Packet Manager
  • Search and mark xul-ext-ubufox for removal
  • Search and mark ubufox for upgrade
  • Apply the changes
  • Now open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and use the following command: sudo apt-get install firefox

Hope it solves your problem. Question, suggestions and feedback are most welcomed. Enjoy :)

How to solve: No sound through laptop integrated speakers in Ubuntu [Updated]

Problem Scenario:

One of the many common problems one faces after installing Ubuntu is sound problem. In this case sound seems to be working, you can hear it on headphones but there is no sound coming out of speakers. Trying using alsa-mixer gives the following error:

load hw:0 error: Invalid argument

The solution provided here works for HDA Intel Soundcard. To find the make of your laptop soundcard click here.

Solution 1:

Try the following command in the terminal:

killall pulseaudio

Solution 2:

You need to edit this file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and then add a line in its end. Use the following commands:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf &

Now add the following line at its end:

options snd-hda-intel model=generic

Now reboot your computer. It should solve your problem. If the solution doesn’t work then try the Further Troubleshoot.

Further Troubleshoot:

The term model = generic may not work in all the cases as sometimes it depends on the model of your sound card. Find your sound card here.

You can try replacing the word generic by the following words depending upon your laptop:

Acer aspire 2012

option snd-hda-intel model=basic

Acer

options snd-hda-intel model=ACER

Asus F3J

options snd-hda-intel model=uniwill-m31

Dell 6400 laptop

options snd-hda-intel model=dell

Dell Inspiron

options snd-hda-intel model=ref

Dell Dimension 9150

options snd-hda-intel model=ref

Fujitsu Siemens Amilo XI 1526

options snd-hda-intel model=fujitsu

Gateway laptops with a sigmatel audio device

options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1

or

options snd-hda-intel model=test enable-msi=1 probe-mask=1

Lenovo:

options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-eapd

LG P1 Express Dual (ALC880 chip)

options snd-hda-intel model=lg

LG P1 with CMI9880 chip

options snd-hda-intel model=minimal

Toshiba Satellite a135-s2386

options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=8 model=3stack

Toshiba Tecra A8-103

options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=8 model=fujitsu

or

options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=8 model=fujitsu

If you could still not found the model you may want to look for the correct value to be used in model in the following file /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/ALSA-Configuration.txt.gz. Unzip the file and look for your sound card. You may find values like this:

ALC260
hp HP machines
fujitsu Fujitsu S7020

Use the following command:

sudo gunzip /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/ALSA-Configuration.txt.gz; sudo gedit ALSA-Configuration.txt &

Hope it solves your problem. Questions, feedback and suggestions are welcome. Enjoy :)

How to solve: Cannot boot into Windows after installing Ubuntu Linux

Problem:

I was installing Ubuntu 10.10 on my old laptop lately in dual boot mode with Windows Vista. I simply could not boot into Windows though I could easily boot into Ubuntu. After going through a number of Ubuntu forum threads, I figured out that it might be a problem with Grub and thus I decided to reinstall Grub. But update-grub did not detect Windows and displayed a message like this:

  ls: cannot access any_path/boot
Boot: No such file or directory

Reason:

The reason which I found (on SourceForge) is that Grub2 was installed with Windows system partition chosen as the root-directory. This causes the folder /boot/grub to be created on the Windows system partition. Since ntfs partitions are case insensitive this leads to confusions between “/boot” and the already existing folder “/Boot”

Solution:

Boot into your Linux OS and deleted or rename the folder /boot on the Windows system partition. Make sure that your don’t delete the /Boot folder. The /Boot folder contains the file “bcd” which is necessary to boot Windows Vista/7.

This solution worked for me flawlessly. Hope it works for you as well. Feedback, suggestions and questions are welcome. Enjoy :)

How to solve: error while loading shared libraries

Problem:

It has happened more than once with me. When I installed an application (freeradius, in this case) from its source code, it gives the following error:

radiusd: error while loading shared libraries:

libfreeradius-radius-2.1.10.so:

cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Reason:

The reason for this error is that the libraries have been installed in a place where dynamic linker cannot find it.

Solution:

Whenever I faced such problem, I used the following command. It has never failed me, not till now 😛

sudo /sbin/ldconfig -v

Hope this command solves your problem as well. Do provide me with your feedback, suggestions and questions. Don’t forget to like/vote the post. Enjoy :)

How to solve: Ubuntu update error

Problem:

Sometimes it happens that running the updates in Ubuntu results in following error:

Could not initialize the package information.
An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the ‘update-manager’ package and include the following error message:
‘E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_binary-amd64_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.’

While running sudo apt-get update results in the following error:

Reading package lists… Error!
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_binary-amd64_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

Moreover, Synaptic Manger fails to start as well.

Solution:

The trick which worked with me is running following commands in the terminal (open terminal using Ctrl+Alt+T):

sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
sudo apt-get update

Hope it solved your problem. Please do subscribe the blog to stay in touch. Suggestions, questions and feedback are welcome. Enjoy :)
